V & A Gift Shop

V & A Gift Shop

Our concept defines a spatial language that is articulated by a clear material strategy. The wall cabinets and display shelves are defined by a rhythm of vertical mild steel fins that run from the floor to a datum of 3.2 metres, defined by the underside of arches over entries to side galleries. Sitting above this is a glowing polycarbonate wall consisting of backlit panels, sandwiched in between steel fins. Depending on their function, the lacquered cabinets vary in height. Those that display large objects such as mannequins and large household are objects lower, while those displaying small objects and items are a standard table height. The latter consist of concealed storage with drawers and some sections with glass top for secure display. Additional storage is integrated among the steel shelving and expressed with a solid Douglas Fir panel that is operable; a soft contrast to the dark grey mild steel vertical fins and horizontal shelving.

The dominant material on first pavilion is mild steel, consisting of horizontal and steel fins and steel cabinets of varying heights for surface display, seating for jewellery display. The second pavilion on the sculpture gallery side is made of structural glass fins and horizontal Douglass Fir Slats to display catalogues. Both pavilions have an ‘ice cube’ like glowing volume sitting on top, which finishes on the underside of the existing steel beams, at the same height as the polycarbonate on the walls.
