Courtyard House
PH III House is a private villa in Hargeisa Somaliland; the capital of the autonomous region in the north of Somalia. The villa is formed of a linear forty-metre-long block that sits in the middle of large garden with fruit trees. The building is split into two sections by a void, which is the main threshold and also works as a connection from back to front, where smaller ancillary buildings are located. On one side of this horizontal void is the communal or semi-public section of the house, while the other side contains the private areas, including the bedrooms, living room and kitchen, used by the family that occupies the house. The public part which is mainly for guests accessed by a separate entrance that ensures there’s no overlap between private and public areas. The house is organised around a hierarchy of shared and private courtyards and verandas. The rest of the plot is used for a vegetable patch, playground and garden small timber pavilions used to host invited guests.
Conceptually, the scheme is conceived as a secret garden with a non-descript wall and no articulated elevations on all four sides. It’s spatial arrangements and formal language is in part, inspired by pre modern houses of nearby coastal towns along the Red Sea.
