Botanical Gardens
In recent years there has been a concerted effort by the government and local institutions to educate the population in Somaliland, and in the wider region about the importance of preserving the local ecosystem. Somaliland is not unique in that its increasingly experiencing droughts and desertification, caused by the loss of plants and vegetation and by the wider global climate crisis.
Our client, who is Somaliland’s most renowned environmentalist has written extensively and campaigned for the preservation of the region’s natural habitat, and in particular its indigenous plants. The proposal is for a botanical garden that brings together a collection of rare indigenous plants on a site that is climatically and ecologically suitable. The aim is that over time, these plants will blossom and will serve as centre of scientific research and educational experience. As well as the plants, the site houses a collection of buildings that include a visitor centre with a café for visitors and passers-by, a conference hall for scientific and research events and a hilltop cabin with a spectacular view of the surrounding landscape for overnight stay.
