1:54 Art Fair

1:54 Art Fair

1:54 Contemporary Arts Fair, London/New York, 2014-5 Rashid Ali Architects designed the 1:54 Contemporary African Arts Fair in London and New York in 2014/5. The Fair takes its name from the 54 countries in the continent. It is the leading platform for artists, galleries, curators, independent art centres and institutions dedicated to promoting African and Africa-related art practices and projects.

Following the footsteps of the inaugural design by David Adjaye, our design distributed the Fair into all three wings of historic Somerset House on the Thames, by the Strand. The design included planning of the galleries and exhibitions, and transformation of the lobby areas for reception, cafe, bookshop and special events. These took on the form of sculptural interventions with rich colours that create a contrasting but sensitive temporary additions to the existing spaces.

In New York, the Fair was presented at Pioneer Works, Center for Art and Innovation. The brief required a design that enabled 16 galleries of varying sizes and social and reception spaces to be installed in a former iron works factory in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
